Five Years later: Remembering Jules Engel. A VIRTUAL EVENT
Janeann Dill and Jules Engel, 1998, Los Angeles
JULES ENGEL (1909-2003) was the Founding Director of the Experimental Animation Department at Cal Arts, Institute Fellow, Artist and Filmmaker whose abstract paintings and films paved a visionary path for over six decades in the varied disciplines of experimental animation and fine arts (painting, printmaking, sculpture).
September 6, 2008 was the fifth-year anniversary of Jules Engel's death. In memoria, Saturday, September 13, 2008, please tell us a story about Jules ... and many likely have one! Add to the discussion already started, start a new discussion thread, or post drawings or animations or photos or video tales to share with those who knew him and with those who did not. If you want to be inspired, re-read the AWN tribute edition from 2003:

Especially if you didn't have an opportunity to contribute to the AWN publication, contribute to this event.
PLEASE ENTER YOUR STORIES ON IIACI (Institute site) at http://interdisciplinaryartinstitute.com and enter COMMENTS in the Guestbook or, enter them here on BLOG Commnets. Once http://julesengel.com launches in November, those comments on IIACI will be transferred to the dedicated Engel site to serve as a living biography of a significant presence in the history of experimental animation.

Everyone is invited to post comments, start discussions, upload videos (upload on Facebook or include links on IIACI Guestbook), or simply tell some stories about Jules, whether you personally knew Jules Engel or not ... it's a day of remembrance to honor a mentor to four generations of students as the Founding Director of Experimental Animation at Cal Arts and a beloved member of the Los Angeles film and fine art community.
